Saputo Pizza with Purpose Award Winners
The Saputo Pizza with Purpose award is an annual competition facilitated by the Canadian Pizza Magazine and sponsored by Saputo Foodservice. It is an opportunity for pizzerias across Canada to showcase their community involvement and their various charitable efforts. The winner is not determined simply based on the amount of money raised, but on all the ways, big and small, that a pizzeria has touched the lives of those around them over the previous year.
This year’s winner was The Kitchen family of the Pizza Mill in Salisbury, N.B. Their volunteer efforts around their community demonstrate exactly what the award is all about.
Dave and Kathryn Kitchen, owners of The Pizza Mill, were inspired by the support they received from their community, both towards their new business when it first opened and towards their family when their youngest daughter was born with a condition called Dandy Walker Syndrome. According to Dave, “it didn’t make sense to either us to take from the town without giving back”.
The Kitchens give generous amounts of both their time and money to their local community. Some of their charitable activities include:
- Gaspareau Award: a bursary to a local high school student who has “demonstrated the highest qualities of citizenship, showing passion and conviction in the areas of honesty, integrity and moral ethics”.
- Charity Pizza Cards: the proceeds of which are given to a variety of charitable causes.
- Salisbury & District Recreation Council and Minor Basketball Program Pizza Giveaway: a celebrity basketball game the Kitchens helped organize and host. The Pizza Mill also donated pizza prizes based on the point differential between Dave’s baskets and those of the 6’9” centre from the local Moncton Miracles pro basketball team.
- Birthday Coupons: a 50% savings for clients of the local food bank, in an effort to enable them to perhaps celebrate and have a small birthday party.
The family’s attitude is summed up nicely by the following statements: “There are opportunities everywhere to make people’s lives better.” “If you see areas where you can help, help.”
As the winners of the Pizza with Purpose award, the Kitchens had their pizzeria featured on the cover of the Canadian Pizza Magazine and received a $2,500 cash prize.
Saputo Foodservice is very proud to support such a worthwhile competition. Our hope is that the Pizza with Purpose award will encourage the winning pizzerias to keep doing all of the great things that they do – and will help to inspire their fellow pizza makers to share in the spirit of generosity and community support!
