Maple Grilled Cheese Sandwich

The Maple Grilled Cheese Sandwich is a culinary masterpiece that offers residents at senior living facilities a delightful blend of flavours and textures. The rich combination of La Sauvagine, sliced Swiss cheese, and Mild White Cheddar cheese harmonizes beautifully to create a gooey and irresistible melted cheese base. Adding candied bacon brings a sweet and savoury crunch, while caramelized onions enhance the depth of flavour with a hint of sweetness. The tangy tomato relish acts as a refreshing contrast that balances the richness of the cheeses and bacon. This dish is a harmonious symphony of flavours that will have your residents wanting more.

Ingredients

  • 2 slices Sourdough Bread
  • 50 gButter (softened)
  • 50 g Mild White Cheddar Cheese
  • 50 g Swiss Cheese Slices
  • 50 g La Sauvagine Cheese
  • 25 g Caramelized Onions
  • 25 g Tomato Relish
  • 3 slices Maple Candied Bacon

Tomato Relish

  • 500 g Tomatoes (chopped)
  • 100 gBrown Sugar
  • 25 ml Vegetable Oil
  • 2 tsp White Wine Vinegar
  • 2 tsp Onion Powder
  • 1 tbsp Fennel Powder
  • 1 tbsp Salt
  • 2 tbsp Cumin

Maple Candied Bacon

  • 400 g Bacon
  • 150 gBrown Sugar
  • 50 ml Maple Syrup
  • 15 g Black Pepper

Directions

  1. Start by toasting the spices for the tomato relish in a dry pan, then add vegetable oil and chopped tomatoes. Cook for a few minutes and adjust the seasoning with brown sugar to your liking.
  2. Reduce the heat and simmer for 2-3 minutes until the mixture thickens.
  3. To prepare the bacon, place it on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Press brown sugar and black pepper onto both sides, ensuring a thick coating. Bake in a 390°F (200°C) oven until the bacon starts to crisp. Then, flip it over, drizzle with maple syrup, and bake until the bacon is crisp, and the sugars caramelize.
  4. Construct the sandwich with all the ingredients and butter the outside of both slices of sourdough bread.
  5. Toast the sandwich in a skillet over medium heat until the bread is golden, then flip and cook the other side.
  6. If the cheeses are not fully melted, finish by baking in the oven until they reach the desired consistency.
